A huge thank you to everyone who helped make VIDEO DRAMA such an amazing experience.
A stone’s throw from the original Video Drama store on Oxford St, it felt pretty special to host this collection of Muriel’s Wedding-inspired pieces so close to one of the film’s iconic sets. Muse Clinic, a New York-style loft space, complete with an indoor atrium, expansive spaces bathed in natural light, and home of Sydney’s largest disco ball, provided the perfect setting to showcase my body of work.
The pieces’ flamboyant, 80s-inspired retro-pop graphics, coupled with the intricately detailed pointillism portraiture endeavour to reflect the delicate dance between comedy and tragedy found in ‘Muriel’s Wedding’, contrasts which have helped make it such a beloved classic.
It was wonderful to meet all who came through the laneway’s pink door, and re-entered the bold, brash world of Muriel Heslop. VIDEO DRAMA coincided with the worldwide premiere of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, so plenty of the film’s fanatics were about. There was so much love in the air. I’ll really treasure this one.
